CARBONDALE — Lightning and rain put a halt to a possible Iola softball split Monday night at Santa Fe Trail.

After an extra-inning 6-5 loss in game one, the Fillies found themselves in pretty good shape, tied up at 2 with the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning. Unfortunately, at that point umpires suspended the game thanks to nearby lightning and an incoming thunderstorm bringing massive wind, rain and hail.

“I was really proud of them for just battling through adversity,” head coach Chris Weide said. “We’ve had some girls who are out and some girls who are at State FFA so we had to have some of our younger girls step up and they did. It’s nice to see them fight, despite the outcome.”

With the loss, the Fillies drop to 6-9 so far this season.

Santa Fe Trail got out to an early 3-0 lead after three innings in game one. After four scoreless innings for the Fillies, their bats started to get going in the top of the fifth where they cut the lead to one run.

The Chargers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth but the Fillies really started to get going thanks to a massive two-run home run that barely escaped the outfielder’s glove by junior Kelsey Morrison.

“Kelsey had a great game tonight,” Weide said. “She has always led by example but this year she has become one of our vocal leaders. She is one of our players that always stays after practice to get extra hitting or fielding practice. Her work ethic and effort is something she should be very proud of.”

One batter later, junior Nissa Fountain reached on a walk and senior Mia Aronson drove her home, giving Iola its first lead of the game at 5-4.

A triple by Santa Fe Trail in the bottom of the seventh set up the tying run for the Chargers and sent the game to extra innings.

Despite a one-out double from freshman Reece Murry, the Fillies struck out and popped out to end the top of the eighth. The Chargers opened their half of the inning with a single followed by a double fueled by an Iola error that scored the winning run.

Murry earned the loss for Iola despite having only four earned runs on eight hits and three walks with eight strikeouts.

Paige Burrough, Morrison, and Murry each had two hits in the loss.

It’s unclear as of press time if a continuation of the game will happen. With the heavy rain sustained last night and the rain that’s in the forecast for today, that seems unlikely. However, the two teams will try to make it up either on Wednesday or Friday. On Thursday, the Fillies host Wellsville before starting postseason play next week.
