BURLINGTON — An impressive display from beyond the arc allowed Iola High’s Fillies to run away to a 69-26 win over Santa Fe Trail for seventh place at the Burlington Midseason Tournament on Saturday.
Iola shot a perfect 10-10 on 3-pointers in the game.
“When you’re relaxed and come out loose, it’s easier. We looked like a whole different team,” coach Becky Carlson said. “I’m really proud of them today. Santa Fe Trail isn’t the best team in our league, I don’t mean that as a slam to them. But, we could’ve come out hanging our heads after our loss last night. That’s what these girls are all about. They just don’t quit.”
Sydney Wade had the hot hand early, downing three 3-pointers in the first quarter — she scored a fourth and final three in the second quarter. Kyra Moore added another three in the first quarter, which was one of two she made on the night. The Fillies stretched the lead to 20-4 after one period.
Mikeala Platt kept the hot shooting going, leading the second quarter off with her only 3-pointer of the game. With 2:45 left to play in the half, Emma Piazza nailed her first three — her second came in the fourth quarter — to give the Fillies a commanding 35-9 lead. Jo Lohman didn’t make a 3-pointer in the game, and had to settle for an old fashioned three-point play.
Piazza led a break and found Lohman underneath for a quick score. She was fouled and made the ensuing free throw. By the end of the first half, the Fillies were up 46-13.
Iola’s Addie Haar took over the third quarter. She scored a team-high 17 points in the game and 10 points in the third quarter alone. Although the Fillies were making the perimeter their second home, Haar scored most of her points in the paint.
Also in the third, Moore banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key while she was fouled. Unfortunately, she didn’t connect on the free throw for the four-point possession. It was just about the only thing that didn’t go Iola’s way in the game.
The win marked the first one for the Fillies this tournament. But, Carlson was happy with the team’s performance in all three games.
“We lost to two good teams. We were in the games with them until the end, so you can’t complain about that,” Carlson said. “I hope we take the things we did good out of this and build on it.”
The Fillies (7-5) host Chanute on Friday. Carlson likes where the team is at this point in the season, but would like to see more confidence. She said Saturday’s game was a good example of how she wants the team to play the rest of the season.
“It’s been good. This was the best overall game that we’ve played in a while,” Carlson said. “Consistency is definitely a key to us doing well. If we come out and score right away, we’re just more relaxed. I’m really proud of them.”
Wade’s performance throughout the tournament earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team.
