COFFEYVILLE — Getting off the snide Thursday night, Iola High’s Fillies swept a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader on the road.
After dropping their first two games of the 2012 season Tuesday at home, the Fillies defeated host Coffeyville-Field Kindley High’s Golden Tornado. The Fillies beat Coffeyville 4-1 and 8-3.
Breail Thompson pitched both games for the Fillies. She limited the Golden Tornado girls to four hits while striking out eight in the opener. She allowed six hits and struck out four in the second game.
“Breail had a standout night both on the mound and at the plate for us,” said Vince Coons, Fillies’ head coach.
“Our girls came together well after losing the two games Tuesday. We hit the ball better and had solid play defensively.”
The Fillies took advantage of walks issued by Coffeyville pitchers in both games.
In the first game Iola had six hits. They scored a run in the second when Hannah Endicott walked and scored on a double by B. Thompson.
Casey Callaway drew a walk to begin the third. With one out, Lauren Toney and Mackenzie Weseloh had back-to-back singles to drive in two runs.
Weseloh walked and scored the fourth run of the game for Iola in the fifth inning. Coffeyville produced a run in the sixth.
Breail Thompson had a single and a double in the game. Toney, Weseloh, Holly Schomaker and Hallie Cleaver each had a single. Libby Shay doubled.
In the second game, Iola built a 6-0 lead with two runs in each of the first three innings. Coffeyville came up with three runs in the third inning. The Fillies added two insurance runs in the seventh.
“Coffeyville was hitting the ball better in the second game but Breail did a good job of pitching strikes. Hallie Cleaver, catching both games, threw out base runners to help us in the second game,” Coons said.
Toney pounded out three base hits and a double, and Schomaker had two doubles and a single in the game. B. Thompson had two singles and a double.
Endicott had two singles. Weseloh and Shay each had a single.
The Fillies are 2-2 overall and in SEK play. They travel to Chanute Monday for league contests.
