OTTAWA — For five innings it was scoreless between Iola High’s Fillies and the Ottawa High Cyclones on Friday.
Both team were fighting for a chance to get back to the Class 4A state tournament. They had met in the 2009 state tournament in the first round with Ottawa beating Iola.
The Cyclones scored a run in the sixth then added four insurance runs — three on a home run by Mikela Scott — in the top of the seventh. The Fillies had a tough task ahead of them.
With one out, Amanda Carr and Molly Riebel had back-to-back singles. Lyndsi Faulhaber drew a walk to load the bases.
The Fillies were only able to score one run before bowing out of the Kansas Class 4A Regional Softball Tournament.
Losing 5-1, the Fillies lost their bid to defend their regional title. Paola defeated Prairie View 6-0 in the other semifinal.
Paola denied Ottawa a trip back to state also The Panthers defeated the Cyclones 2-1 in the championship game.
Alex Hill pitched her final game for IHS and gave up six hits, walked four and struck out four. The Iola defense made four errors behind her.
Hill and fellow senior Kylee McKarnin had the other hits, both singles, for the Fillies.
The Fillies finished the season at 16-3. The lose Hill, McKarnin, Riebel, Faulhaber, Carr, Megan Cook, Brandi Preston, Shelby Greenwood and Dominique Stokes to graduation.
