FORT SCOTT — Not much went Iola High Fillies’ way Monday evening in Kansas Class 4A Regional Softball Tournament play.
They reached base only five times and only once by a hit. Fort Scott High’s Jenna Harper and the Tiger defense kept the Fillies tethered pretty tight.
The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game by run-rule, 11-1. It also ended the Fillies’ season.
“This was a great group of young ladies who are hard working and dedicated to the program,” said Vince Coons, Fillies’ head coach. “I wish they could have found more success this season.”
Iola concluded its season at 3-17. The Fillies lose one senior, Leah Weir.
“We’ll miss the team’s MVP Leah Weir. She has been a great player for me the past four years,” Coons said.
“She has been a very supportive senior leader. All the players look up to her ethic, team spirit and leadership.”
The Fillies averted a no-hitter and a shutout in the fifth inning. With one gone, Kayla Knavel worked back from a two-strike count to draw a walk. She went to second base on a passed ball.
Lauren Toney connected for a two-out single to drive in Knavel.
Fort Scott scored twice in the first inning. The Tigers added three runs in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth then the three in the sixth.
Breail Thompson was the losing pitcher for Iola. She allowed 11 hits, three walks and struck out three.
Iola had five errors in the game. The Fillies did have a strange triple play in the fifth. A force out at third got Fort Scott’s base runners confused. The runner on first and the batter were called out.
