LOUISBURG — Iola High’s Fillies ended their 2010 volleyball season in the opening match of Saturday’s Kansas Class 4A Substate Tournament.
The Fillies went into substate as the No. 7 seeded team drawing an opening match against No. 2 Spring Hill. Spring Hill defeated the Fillies 25-12, 25-11.
Louisburg, host team and third-seeded, upended Spring Hill in the semifinals. Paola defeated top-seeded Fort Scott in the other semifinal match.
Louisburg earned a Class 4A state tournament berth by  beating Paola 25-17, 25-17 in the championship match.
The Fillies ended the season at 8-25.
“We had such a great start to the match Saturday,” said Jodi Grover, Iola head coach.
“The first set started out with Libby Shay making a perfect pass to Kelsey Larson, who set the ball up for Kendra Taiclet. Kendra hit it over a triple block for a kill. The next play set to Toni Taylor for a kill.”
Grover said the Fillies were playing aggressively, their passing was right on, setting was good and “we hit with confidence.”
“We played Spring Hill point to point up to 10 points then a server had a run of eight points on us. We missed five serves during the first set and had 11 bad passes.” Grover said.
“We just couldn’t dig out of the hole from serve receive which has been a concern part of the season.”
Grover said in the second set, the Fillies were dominated by two Spring Hill servers.
For the substate match, Taiclet had six kills and three digs and Larson had three kills and five set assists. Taylor had two kills and four assists.
Kirstin McGuffin had an ace serve and two digs. Riana Dolenz, Shay and Celeste Ambrose each had a dig.
“The girls showed us what they are capable of doing, which is exciting,” Grover said. “We will miss our seniors Toni and Kirstin. We are young and the positive attitudes and work ethic is here.”
