BURLINGTON — Iola, Humboldt and Southern Coffey County competed in the Burlington Invitational Saturday with SCC’s Lady Titans taking second and Humboldt’s Lady Cubs finishing third.
Humboldt went 2-1 in pool play, falling only to eventual champion Burlington.
They started off with a 2-0 win over St. Paul.
Aricah McCall led the way with five kills and five aces.
The Lady Cubs continue their success versus Waverly, winning 2-0, (25-19, 25-22).
McCall had eight kills and three blocks in the win while Rylan Wilhite had 11 assists.
Humboldt struggled versus Burlington, falling 2-0 (25-20, 25-6).
The Lady Cubs hit for a negative percentage for the first time all tournament and recording only three kills and one ace.
Iola struggled at Burlington, going 1-2 in pool play and failing to advance to the championship bracket.
The Fillies started off with a 2-0 win over Fredonia (25-16, 25-8).
Senior Piper Moore led the way with nine kills with Mia Aronson putting up a team high four aces. Aronson also recorded 10 assists.
Iola then took on Southern Coffey County and fell in straight sets to the Lady Titans (25-20, 25-19).
Moore had a team-high seven kills with Katie Bauer came in right behind with six.
The Fillies closed out their tournament run with Lebo. Iola put up a fight, but fell 2-1 in three sets (26-25, 10-25, 25-18).
In all, Moore had 30 kills in the three matches followed by Colbi Riley with 13 kills. Aronson had eight aces with Riley and Paige Burrows recording six each.
In addition to Southern Coffey County’s win over Iola, the Lady Titans also beat Lebo 2-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-18) and fell to Fredonia 2-0 (25-17, 25-16).
Southern Coffey County and Humboldt advanced out of pool play to the championship bracket where they met each other in the opening round.
The Titans prevailed in two sets, 26-24, 25-19.
Lizzie Myers, McCall and Camrie Farran each recorded four kills for Humboldt.
The Titans advanced to the championship match versus host Burlington while Humboldt took on Lebo in the third-place match.
Burlington won the championship 2-0 (25-16, 25-16) over Southern Coffey County and Humboldt beat Lebo 2-0 (25-20, 25-14) to take third place.
“I thought we battled all day,” Lady Cubs head coach Terry Meadows said. “We had some really nice things happen in our serving which helped keep us on top.”
McCall had five kills and three aces in the win to go along with four kills, two blocks and three aces from Myers.
The Fillies will head to Osawatomie Tuesday to take on Prairie View and Wellsville while Humboldt hosts Olathe Metro and Erie. Southern Coffey County will travel to Madison.
