Even with the split of Class 4A into two divisions this year — the smaller 32 schools are now part of 4A, Division II — Iola High’s Fillies still will have tough row to hoe in order to advance far in the postseason. OTHER SCHOOLS: AREA HIGH schools also have their sights set on the football postseason playoffs, which will be determined by their record in district play.
Regional and substate assignments were announced this week by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
The Fillies will travel to Garnett Oct. 26 for their substate tournament, where they’ll face regional powers Burlington and Anderson County, as well as old Southeast Kansas League rival Parsons.
The winner will advance to the state tournament Nov. 1 and 2 in Salina.
Even with the split, both Class 4A divisions will play their state tournaments in Salina’s Bicentennial Center.
Also Oct. 26, Iola’s cross country teams will head to the Eisenhower Road Course in Ottawa for the regional meet. The girls races begin at 2:30 p.m.; the boys at 3 o’clock. The top three teams, plus the top 10 individual runners outside those schools will advance to the 4A state meet Nov. 2 in Wamego.
The Fillies tennis team will head to Parsons Oct. 11 and 12 for their regional tournament. Competition begins at 10 a.m. at the Forest Park Courts at the intersection of Broadway and Heacock streets. Regional competitors are vying for a bid at the state tournament Oct. 18 and 19 in Topeka.
Tennis and cross country compete under a single Class 4A umbrella.
— Humboldt High’s Class 3A substate volleyball tournament is at Cherokee-Southeast High School Oct. 26 for a berth at the state tournament in Emporia. Other substate teams Arma-Northeast, Cherryvale, Erie, Galena, Jayhawk-Linn and Riverton.
Cub cross country runners will be at Pleasanton’s Sugar Valley Golf Course for the 3A regionals. Girls begin running at 3 p.m., the boys at 3:30.
— Marmaton Valley High and Southern Coffey County High both will be at the Class 1A, Division I volleyball substate competition in Lebo for a berth at the state tournament in Hays. Other schools participating: Marais des Cygne Valley, St. Paul and Waverly.
Marmaton Valley’s cross country runners will be at the Cessna Activities Center in Wichita for the 1A regional meet.
— Crest High’s volleyball team will be at the Class 1A, Division II substate in Chetopa. Their state tournament also is in Hays. Other schools in the Lady Lancers’ substate are Argonia, Altoona-Midway and Elk Valley.
— Yates Center High’s volleyball team will be in Pleasanton for the Class 2A substate tournament to take on the host Blu-Jays as well as West Elk, Madison-Hamilton, St. Marys Colgan, Oswego, Sedan and Uniontown. The winner advances to the state tournament in Emporia. The 2A state tournament is in Emporia.
Like Humboldt, Yates Center’s cross country team will be at Sugar Valley Golf Course in Pleasanton for the 2A regional meet. Girls race at 2 p.m., the boys at 2:30.
Any runners from Iola, Humboldt, Marmaton Valley or Yates Center who qualify for state will run at the state meet Nov. 2 in Wamego. The 3A state qualifiers from Humboldt will race at Lawrence’s Rim Rock Farm, also Nov. 2.
District play for Iola begins Oct. 18 in Chanute, with games to follow Oct. 25 in Fort Scott and Oct. 31 at home against Anderson County.
Humboldt’s district play begins Oct. 18 at Eureka with games to follow at Fredonia and at home against Burlington.
District play for the state’s eight-man schools begins Friday. Marmaton Valley is home against Marais des Cygne Valley, Crest is at Waverly, Southern Coffey County is at Elk Valley and Yates Center hosts Pleasanton. Marmaton Valley and Yates Center are both in Eight Man I, District 2. Crest and Southern Coffey County, meanwhile, are both in Eight II, District 3.
The teams with the top two records in each district will advance to the postseason.
