The “boys of summer” are becoming the “boys of fall” in Iola.
More than 70 youngsters participated in a pair of independent fall baseball leagues this fall.
Iolan Jeff White organized the league, which began in early September and featured games on Sundays.
Iola had enough players in grades 3-5 for three Little League teams and three coach pitch squads for students in second grade and younger.
The leagues wrapped up with a tournament Sunday at Iola’s Riverside Park.
“It was a great turnout for these boys wanting to continue their baseball season beyond the summer months,” White said.
After unsuccessfully attempting to start up a fall league in years past, Iola’s hopes were given a boost, White said, after talking with coaches and parents from surrounding towns. The clincher was when coaches in Osawatomie and Chanute brought in teams.
Locally, players came from Iola, Humboldt, Colony, Moran and Uniontown, White said.
“We will continue this next fall, due to the success and the growth it provides for Iola baseball in the future,” he said.
The Little League featured four teams, three from Iola and one from Chanute. The three Iola coach pitch squads were joined by a team from Osawatomie.
