The Iola Middle School volleyball teams traveled to Wellsville on Tuesday and came away with mixed results. The eighth grade teams grabbed wins while the seventh-graders struggled, losing both of their matches.
The Pony eighth grade A-team swept through the home team in three sets (25-8, 25-21, 25-23) leaving zero doubt on the court.
“We came out extremely strong in the first set,” head coach Terri Carlin said. “This a scrappy and aggressive team, and they really showed their best ball in the first set. Everything was going right for us. Wellsville stepped up their play in the second and third sets. However, we made some great plays to stay on top to win the match.”
Jenna Curry led the way for the Ponies offensively recording a team-high five kills to go along with four aces.
Chloe Sell was also a force, serving up a team-high seven aces along with a team-high five assists.
The B-team ran into a little more opposition but still prevailed, beating Wellsville in four sets (25-13, 20-25, 25-12, 25-23).
“The girls worked really hard to win this match,” Carlin said. “The fourth set was really close and the girls fought and came out with the win.”
Mariah VanNice had a nice night of serving, putting up a team-high eight aces to go along with an assist and a kill.
Miah Shelby followed, recording seven aces along with Vivian Noah who had six aces.
The seventh grade teams struggled. Both teams fell in three sets with the A-Team falling 14-25, 9-25 and 13-25.
The Ponies will get their first taste of competition on their home court as they take on Osawatomie at 4 p.m. Monday.
