UNIONTOWN— Opening the 2012 softball season evenly were the Uniontown High’s Eagles and Yates Center High Wildcats.
The hosting Eagles used a five-run fifth inning to post a 10-5 victory in the first game. Yates Center had just taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the inning.
Taylor Wade was the winning pitcher for Uniontown, allowing six hits and five walks and striking out five. Yates Center used Daryean Estes for 4 2/3 innings and Aubrey Smith for 1 1/3 innings.
Jessica Murrow and Mandie Ridge each connected for three singles for Uniontown, which had 15 hits in the game. Brittany Stokes and Torrie Hathaway each had two base hits.
Hope Jurgensen doubled. Lakyn Coyan, Jamie Dawson and Raylene Crystal each had a single.
Yates Center’s Smith shut down the Uniontown offense in the second game. The Wildcats broke a scoreless game open in the final three innings for a 12-0 win.
Smith limited the Eagles to two hits, she walked three and struck out two.
Tayler Shook and Ridge each had a single for Uniontown in the game. Ridge took the pitching loss, allowing 12 hits walking six and striking out 10.
There was no report from Yates Center on the games by the Register’s press time. No individual hitting statistics were available for the Wildcats.
“It was like two different teams for us,” said Alan Shinn, Eagle head coach. “We played well offensively and defensively in the first game then just didn’t have it in the second game.”
