UNIONTOWN — Uniontown High’s softball team held off a rally by Northeast High’s Vikings for a 6-5 win to open Tuesday’s Three Rivers League doubleheader.
But in the second game, the Vikings came up with a 7-3 victory over the Eagles. It was the first TRL loss of the season for the Eagles and second overall.
Northeast was the home team despite playing at Uniontown. Wet fields in Arma moved the games to Uniontown Tuesday.
“Their pitcher, Katie Amershek, kept us off balance the entire day. In the first game we were able to scratch out the victory by being aggressive on the base paths,” said Alan Shinn, Eagle head coach.
“In the second game, we didn’t get enough base runners and we made some defensive mistakes. Northeast took advantage of those.”
Tayler Shook pitched both games for the Eagles. She gave up three hits, walked six, hit one batter and struck out eight in the opener. Shook allowed 10 hits, walked four and struck out six in the second game.
The Eagles built a 6-1 lead through 5 1/2 innings in the first contest. Northeast scored four runs in the sixth.
Tiffany Poyner led the Eagle offense with two doubles. Jessie Camac had a single and a double. Hope Jurgensen and Lakin Coyan each had two singles. Mandy Ridge singled.
Northeast led 3-2 after one inning of the second contest. The Eagles tied it at 3-all with a run in the top of the third.
Northeast responded with two runs in its half of the third. The Vikings added two insurance runs in the sixth for the 7-3 win.
Uniontown had just three hits in the second game. Brittany Stokes, Jurgensen and Shook each had a single.
The Eagles are 7-1 in TRL play and 10-2 overall. They host Altoona-Midway High’s Jets Thursday in league action.
