FORT SCOTT — It was a cool, sunny day with a little breeze and an appearance by some deer on the golf course.
That’s how Monday’s Uniontown High Invitational girls’ golf tournament was described. The Eagle girls hosted their tournament at Fort Scott’s Woodland Hills Golf Course.
Fredonia High’s Yellowjackets were boosted into first place with the top two individual scores of the day. Stevi Wilson won the tournament with a 99 for the 18 holes and Felicia Edson shot a 105. Fredonia had a team total of 429.
Grabbing second place were the Eagles with a team score of 447. The Eagles went 3-4-5 as seniors Veronica Harrison, Sabrena McAnulty and Emily Simpson earned individual medals.
“Our girls did a really nice job on the day. We had our typical bad holes but were able to overcome them and put together some good rounds,” said Jason Tourtillott, Uniontown golf coach.
“You couldn’t have asked for a nicer day to be on the course competing.”
Harrison led the way for the Eagles with a 107 (52-55). McAnulty (58-50) and Simpson (53-55) each carded a 108. Sophomore Jordan Mason finished with a 124 (65-59) and junior Monica Ramsey had a 130 (67-63).
Yates Center High’s Becky Wendland ended up seventh with a 113 (63-50). Bailie Stuber shot a 127 (64-63) and Marlana Buchanan had a 141 (72-69).
Uniontown and Yates Center finish up regular season play Monday at the Anderson County High Invitational in Garnett. Then it’s time to prepare for the Kansas Class 3-2-1A regional tournament.
Uniontown hosts the regional tournament, which Yates Center will play in also, Oct. 10 at Woodland Hills. Other teams in the regional are Caney Valley, Eureka, Fredonia, Galena and West Franklin.
The top three teams plus the next five lowest individual scores, not members of the three qualifying teams, advance to state. The state tournament is Oct. 17 at Emporia.
