Eagles rip Wildcats in openers

YATES CENTER — Uniontown High’s Eagles had the bats going even in the cold winter-like temperatures Tuesday. The Eagles combined for 22 hits in their doubleheader sweep over host Yates Center High’s Wildcats.
The Eagles broke open a 2-1 game with two runs in the third then six runs in the fifth on their way to a 12-1 victory. The teams were tied 1-1 after the first inning of the opening game. Uniontown’s win came in five innings.
The Eagles steadily scored runs in the second game for a 15-5 win in five innings. Yates Center scored two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. It was the 2011 season opener for both teams.
“I thought we hit the ball well in spite of the weather and we ran the bases well,” said Alan Shinn, Eagle head coach. “We looked pretty good on defense also. We need to correct our mistakes and look to improve on our performance.”
Tayler Shook was the winning pitcher in both games for the Eagles. Shook held the Wildcats to three hits in the first game, hit one batter and struck out five. In the second contest, Shook allowed five hits, walked four and struck out four.
Connecting for a single and a double each in the opener for the Eagles were Hope Jurgensen, Shook, Jessie Camac and Britney Stokes. Tiffany Poyner and Mandy Ridge each had a single.
Shook delivered two doubles while Poyner, Camac and Lakyn Coyan each had two singles each in the second game. Jurgensen and Stokes had a double apiece. Hitting a single each were Jessica Murrow and Torrie Hathaway.
According to UHS statistics, Daryean Estes pitched both games for the Wildcats. She walked seven in the first game, hit two batters and struck out two. In the second game, Estes walked four, hit two batters and struck out three.
There was no report to the Register from Yates Center.
Uniontown also won a junior varsity game 13-4. Taylor Wade pitched. Regan Weyant and DaNisha Robinson each had a double.
