Uniontown High’s Eagles had an opportunity to take a step toward qualifying for Class 3A postseason play going into last Friday’s district game at Pomona. West Franklin High’s Falcons held the Eagles scoreless in the second half of a 29-14 victory.
Crest High’s Lancers bounced back from a tough eight-man district loss to Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats a week ago. The Lancers rolled up a 40-18 win over host Yates Center High’s Wildcats Friday.
At Pomona, West Franklin jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. The Eagles scored 14 points in the second period but the Falcons added a touchdown and a two-point conversion to post a 21-14 halftime lead.
After the intermission, the Falcons scored a touchdown and two-point conversion in the third for the final margin.
Garrett Murrow rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles. Zach Travis had the other touchdown and Jordan Woods had 67 yards rushing. Robert Kuns made three catches for 40 yards.
West Franklin put together 279 yards of total offense and Uniontown had 235 yards of offense. The Eagles lost two fumbles and threw an interception.
With the loss, the Eagles dropped to 0-2 in Class 3A, District play and 4-4 overall. They host Central Heights (1-1, 4-4) Thursday.
Crest kept Yates Center winless for the season. The Lancers powered out to a 32-0 lead almost halfway through the second quarter. The Wildcats (0-8) got on the scoreboard at the 3:46 mark of the period.
Fourteen seconds later, Kyle Hammond threw his third touchdown pass to Jordan Morton handing the Lancers a 40-6 halftime lead. Yates Center scored a touchdown in the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter.
Hammond and Morton hooked up on a 22-yard strike to open the game then an 11-yard scoring pass later in the first period. In between, Trevor Holman had a one-yard touchdown run. Hammond tossed a two-point conversion pass to Jory Ramsey plus had two conversion runs.
The second quarter began with Morton throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Hammond and Hammond tacking on the two-point conversion. The final Lancer touchdown was a 46-yard pass from Hammond to Morton. Hammond flipped the two-point conversion pass to Cole Bowen.
Hammond rushed for 144 yards on 17 carries and was 7 of 12 passing for 122 yards. Morton was 2 of 2 for 36 yards plus caught four for 81 yards. C. Bowen had three receptions for 50 yards. Crest had 209 yards rushing and 158 yards passing.
Defensively, Jayden Bowen racked up 14 tackles for the Lancers and Holman had eight tackles. Hammond made sevens stops and Boone had six tackles.
Crest is 2-6 going into this Thursday’s season finale at home against Pleasanton.
