FRONTENAC – Uniontown High’s Eagle boys were knotted up 33-33 with host Frontenac High’s Raiders Friday night. The Eagles were trying to get to overtime and extend their winning streak.
The Raiders hit two free throws with one second on the clock to hand the Eagles just their second loss of the season. The 35-33 non-league loss put the Eagle boys at 7-2 for the year.
“This is a tough loss to take.We felt like we controlled the game for most of the night,” said Nathan Hinrichs, UHS boys head coach.
“We weren’t able to keep them off the line in the fourth quarter. They knocked down a lot of free throws.”
Brenton Esslinger paced the Eagles with 20 points. Zach Travis added five points and Seth Sympson had four points. Scoring two points each were Domonic Robinson and Jonathan Ulrey.
Uniontown High’s girls “ran into a buzz saw tonight” according to Eagle head coach Ken Holt. Frontenac’s girls held the Eagles in check and won 65-33. It was 34-14 at halftime.
“That is a really good basketball team. Their pressure was relentless and we didn’t handle it very well,” Holt said.
Uniontown had 39 turnovers in the game.
The Eagle girls slipped to 5-3 on the season.
Hope Jurgensen led the Eagles with eight points, three assists and two steals. DaNisha Robinson controlled seven rebounds and Hayden Rathbun had six.
Frontenac was led by Bailey Flora’s 15 points. Meghan Winden chipped in with 12 points.
Uniontown’s teams head to Pleasanton next week for the annual PHS Blu-Jays Mid-Season Basketball Tournament.
The Eagle boys are top seeded and play Altoona-Midway Tuesday. The Eagle girls drew Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs in the first round Tuesday.
