PITTSBURG — Hanging tough for the first half, Uniontown High’s Eagle girls fell to the pressure of Pittsburg-St. Mary’s-Colgan High’s Panthers Friday.
The Panthers built on an 18-13 halftime lead to win 48-33.
“We did not handle their pressure very well in the second and third quarters,” said Ken Holt, Uniontown girls’ head coach. “We could not seem to stop Brandee Main inside.”
Main led the Panthers with 22 points. Colgan outscored Uniontown 19-7 in the third quarter to take full control of the contest.
Breanna Esslinger had 13 points and five rebounds for Uniontown. Hayden Rathbun had nine points and eight rebounds.
Hope Jurgensen claimed four steals and had three assists for the Eagles, who fell to 4-4 overall.
“We need to regroup and get ready for next week’s tournament,” Holt said.
THE EAGLE BOYS were overmatched by the Kansas Class 2A third-ranked Panther boys. Colgan pushed out to a 38-12 halftime margin on its way to a 63-30 win.
The loss dropped the Eagle boys to 4-4.
Zach Travis scored 12 points for the Eagles. Dakota Wiley had four rebounds and four assists for the Eagles.
Uniontown was 8 of 15 from the free-throw line. Colgan hit 9 of 11 free throw attempts.
The Panther boys got 14 points each from Andy Farmer and Kelley Thompson.
The Uniontown teams compete in next week’s Pleasanton High Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament in Pleasanton. In opening-round games Tuesday, The Eagle girls play Altoona-Midway at 4 p.m. and the Eagle boys take on Prairie View at 5:30.
