Allen Community College handled Fort Scott Community College comfortably for the second time this season. The Lady Devils earned their second consecutive win, 64-59, over the Greyhounds.

“The girls are getting confidence, and every win gives you more confidence,” head coach Rachel Janzen said. “That’s their biggest thing right now, because we know the talent we have on this team, we just have to learn to play together. And they are right now, we are playing really well as a team.”

ACC started in an early 3-8 hole when Janzen called a timeout to help the Lady Devils find their groove. Gabby Guzman responded with a 3-pointer to spark ACC’s offense and the Lady Devils would end the first half leading 31-21.

Coming out of the break, the Lady Devils fought to increase their 10-point advantage. Masie Schroeder had a major impact off the bench for ACC. Schroeder’s inside dominance opened the perimeter for Taryn Kelley and Brandi Jordan to connect on efforts from beyond the arc. The Lady Devils ended the third quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 17-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Devils maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter until the closing stages of the period. The Greyhounds came within five points with 1:27 remaining before Janzen called a timeout. After both teams traded misses, Fort Scott elected not to foul to stretch out the game. ACC closed out the Greyhounds 64-59.

“I told them at half time, we do not let up off the gas, because they are the type of team that can go on runs too, and sure enough they did.” Janzen said. “Our biggest thing right now is being consistent, because we get into droughts. We got into one in the second quarter, and one in the fourth quarter, but overall, we did really well.”

Freshman Courtney Crippen has been ACC’s energizer bunny this season. Against Fort Scott, she recorded a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Janzen praised Guzman’s efforts. The sophomore guard finished as the Lady Devils’ leading scorer with 16 points. Also finishing in double figures was Schroeder with 10 points.

The spreading of the wealth amongst ACC’s finishers is a pleasant sight.

“I always want it to be very balanced with everybody because I don’t base the team around one player,” Janzen said. “Every game it is somebody different, and we usually have three or four in double figures every game. That means we are sharing the ball, which is great to see.”

Janzen expects to get starters Ariel Walker and Zariah Sango back next week. Walker is currently dealing with an Achilles injury while Sango battles back pain.

The Lady Devils will be back at home Friday with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Southwestern College.
