CHERRYVALE — Humboldt Middle School’s girls rode a sterling defensive effort to victory Thursday evening.

The Lady Cub defense held host Cherryvale scoreless through the third quarter, and for half of the fourth period, allowing Humboldt to emerge with a 19-13 victory.

The win highlighted a competitive evening, with the Lady Cubs B team coming back to eke out a 16-15 win.

Cherryvale held Humboldt’s C team without a point in the first quarter in a 15-5 two-quarter victory.

“All three games were hard fought against a very physical Cherryvale team,” Humboldt head coach Eric Carlson said.

“The A team girls applied pressure to the Cherryvale girls the entire game,” he said. “We were able to take them out of their offense and disrupt the flow of the game all night. It was great effort and hustle for these girls.”

Bailey Daniels scored 10 points to lead Humboldt. Adisyn Drake followed with three points and 10 rebounds. Kaydence Whitworth scored two points, as did Adalyn Hillmon and Jadey Ellis. Whitworth added six rebounds and six steals. Drake had four steals, as did Daniels.

Cherryvale jumped out quickly to take the lead in the second quarter before Humboldt rallied, outscoring the Chargers 10-4 in the third and fourth periods combined.

Jadey Ellis led with 13 points. Hillmon scored two and Karis Cook one.

“The A girls are very steady and have a good understanding of game situations,” Carlson said. “The B girls are still learning and will continue to improve and gain ‘basketball smarts.’”

Cherryvale led 10-0 in the C team game and never looked back.

Braydie Whitworth scored three and Carlin Hart two for Humboldt’s C team.
