WICHITA — The Humboldt High cross country team’s season came to an end at Saturday’s Class 3A regional meet.

The Humboldt girls team earned a fifth place finish with an average time of 25:27 while the boy Cubs got 10th place with an average time of 22:30. Anna Heisler took home the top spot of all the Cubs in the girls 5,000-meter run with a 24th place finish in 24 minutes flat.

“You can measure success in many ways. One of those ways is how much you can improve,” Humboldt head coach Eric Carlson said. “Nearly every runner set a personal-record this year and with 17 kids on the team that is a huge accomplishment.”

The Lady Cubs were led in the 5,000-meter run by Heisler’s 24th place finish, followed by McKenna Jones 25th place finish in 24:00. Tori Melendez took a 32nd place finish in 24:47. Mallory Sinclair earned a 48th place finish in 27:12 while Sophia Barlow got 49th in 27:16.

Danica Modlin came in 50th place in 27:43 while Jo Ellison took home 53rd place in 29:44.

“Both squads did a good job trying to run with each other,” Carlson said. “The boys were able to motivate each other in practice and at meets. Their ability to keep eyes on each other and know if one was pulling away the other could do the same thing was huge for our ability to keep getting better.”

In the boys 5,000-meter run, Colden Cook finished 38th with a time of 21:36. Brigg Shannon followed in 45th place with a time of 22:13 and Thatcher Mueller took a 47th place finish in 22:31.

Landon Bauer came in 54th place with a time of 23:00 while Maxtyn Mueller placed 55th in 23:10. Jack Works followed in 59th place with a time of 23:25 and Nathan Swogar came in 60th place with a finish of 23:28.

Humboldt’s season comes to a close with no runners reaching the Class 3A state meet in Lawrence on Saturday.
