CANEY — Tanner McNutt made his mark on Humboldt High and Tri-Valley League track in his first season.
The sophomore, who transferred from Marmaton Valley to Humboldt this year, claimed two TVL championships at the Thursday league track meet. He set one HHS record and came close to another.
McNutt won the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 51⁄2 inches. The Humboldt boys’ school record was 41’6”.
In the 400-meter dash, McNutt was .02 seconds off of tying the Humboldt record. He ran a personal-best time of 50.82 seconds to win the league title.
McNutt also took third in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5’10” plus ran on the second-place 4×400-meter relay team with Nick Keazer, Derrik McCall and Jarred Barr. Their time was 3 minutes, 43.9 seconds.
Yates Center High’s Wildcats had a good day with their two sophomore boys competing. The Yates Center girls had an off-day at the TVL meet.
Senior Brae Adams was denied her fourth TVL championship in the discus. Adams finished fourth with a throw of 98 feet.
Sam Aguirre had personal-best times in both hurdle races. He was second in the 110-meter highs at 15.8 seconds. Aguirre took the silver in the 300-meter intermediates in 43.3 seconds.
Aguirre also was fourth in the long jump. C.J. Stiffler placed third in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 142 feet.
Paige Steinforth placed third in the girls’ high jump for Yates Center. She went over 4’8” and teammate Cherokee Shafer was sixth, also at 4’8”.
Haley Bedell was fourth in the 300-meter low hurdles in 55.65 seconds. Mindi Holloway was sixth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 20.4 seconds.
Holloway placed sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:50 and Shafer was seventh at 2:52.
The Wildcat girls’ 4×100-meter relay team of Steinforth, Shafer, Bedell and Holloway was fifth in 59 seconds. Steinforth, Shafer and Bedell combined with Holloway for fifth in the 4×400-meter relay race in 4:41.
HUMBOLDT’S boys had a bronze-medal performance from Keazer in the 400-meter dash in 53.82 seconds. Michael Davis was fifth in the 3200-meter run in 12:33.73 and Hayden Boring took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18’6”.
The Cubs’ 4×800-meter relay team of Keazer, Boring, McCall and Barr was fourth in 9:52. The 4×100-meter relay team of Keazer, Dexton Daniels, Boring and Noah Thornbrugh was fifth in 48.78 seconds.
Humboldt’s girls picked up bronze medals in the 4×800-meter relay race. Raquel Hill, Whitney Strack, Kolbyn Allen and Michaela Bartlett ran third in 12:39.02.
Hill was fifth in the 3200-meter run in 14:40. Strack took fifth in the 100-meter dash in 13.62 seconds.
The Lady Cubs’ 4×100-meter relay team of Bartlett, Anna Setter, Allen and Strack was sixth in 59.45 seconds.
Yates Center hosts Humboldt and others in a Kansas Class 2A Regional track meet on Friday.
