Cubs ward off Viking challenge

PLEASANTON — A second-quarter spurt catapulted Humboldt High’s boys to victory Tuesday evening to open the Pleasanton Midseason Tournament.
The top seed Cubs took the upper hand in the second period, leading 40-34 at the break.
The Chargers, seeded eighth, stayed within striking distance but could not overcome the Cub advantage in Humboldt’s 76-70 win.
The Cubs will next play Uniontown at 7 p.m. Thursday in their second game of the round-robin tournament. They’ll then square off against Jayhawk-Linn at 7 p.m. Friday.
Humboldt had four players in double figures. The Cubs shot a sizzling 56 percent from the field with only five turnovers. Humboldt shot 63 percent from 2-point range and hit 20 of 25 free throws.
Leading the way was Markiz Pulliam with 18 points on 7 of 9 shooting, seven rebounds and two steals. Caleb Vanatta was next with 16 points, while Robbie Sellman had 13 points — he was 3 of 4 from 3-point range — and four rebounds. Hunter Murrow scored 11. Justin Meins added two steals, while Caleb D’Armond dished out five assists.
