FREDONIA — Keyed by its transition game, and led by sophomore Trey Sommer, Humboldt High’s Cubs overcame a slow start to roll past host Fredonia, 73-59.

The Lady Cubs also prevailed, 53-32.

Sommer, a 6-1 sophomore, hit 12 of 16 field goals en route to a 29-point, seven-rebound night.

“Trey had a monster game,” Humboldt head coach David Taylor said. “He’s good around the basket, and he plays even bigger than he is.”

It took a while to get on track.

Fredonia jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead in the first quarter before Humboldt came back to outscore Fredonia, 26-11, through the duration of the first half.

And after a brief lull to start the third quarter, Humboldt hit its groove.

“We started getting out in transition, and had a real good quarter,” Taylor said.

Humboldt had things well in control, leading 55-34 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Fredonia found its shooting touch in the fourth quarter, scoring 25 points in the period, but the Cubs still had victory well in hand.

“I was real pleased with how the kids battled in the first to get out of that hole to start with,” Taylor said. “Everybody contributed.”

Drew Wilhite chipped in with 13 points, Gavin Page scored 11, and Drake Harrington and Levi McGowen both scored nine.

McGowen also had five rebounds and four steals. Wilhite had eight assists and four steals.

THE LADY Cubs cranked up some defensive pressure of their own.

Humboldt led 11-5 after one period and 24-16 at the break before sealing the win with a 15-3 third-quarter spurt.

Humboldt utilized a balanced scoring attack, with Karley Wools scoring 13 points, Jada Dangerfield 12 and Jessica Myers 11. Carsyn Haviland chipped in with seven, Isabelle Murrow scored five and Kenisyn Hottenstein scored three.

Wintry weather has pushed back the girls home game today against Eureka to Friday.
