CHERRYVALE  — Humboldt High’s Cubs took to the court Friday for their first game in nearly a month.

“And it showed,” Cub head coach David Taylor said.

The Cubs struggled in the half-court offense, committing 24 turnovers in a 63-38 loss at Cherryvale.

“For the positives, they pressed us, and we broke the press well,” Taylor said.

But it was when Cherryvale settled into a half-court defense that Humboldt struggled.

“We struggled with our entry passes,” Taylor said. “We struggled with all of our passes. We struggled in the half-court offensively and defensively. You could tell we hadn’t played. We weren’t ready.”

The Cubs got off to quick starts in both halves, but struggled mightily in the second and fourth quarters.

Cherryvale took the upper hand with a 12-3 second-quarter run to lead 31-20 at the break. Humboldt stayed within shouting distance through the third period, but the Chargers ended the game with a 20-7 run.

Trey Sommer and Colden Cook led the way for Humboldt.

Sommer led with 11 points and eight rebounds. Cook followed with nine points and 10 boards. Drew Wilhite chipped in with seven points.

Stetson Schafer poured in 21 points to pace Cherryvale.
