HUMBOLDT The Humboldt Cubs hung half a hundred points on Northeast Alma before halftime, as they cruised to a 74-6 win over the Vikings on Senior Night.
Conor Haviland had another brilliant performance, toting the ball 8 times for 171 yards, to go along with 4 TD runs, including a 54-yard scoring jaunt on the first play of the game.
In all, five seniors scored touchdowns in their final regular-season home game.
Even though the contest was over before the first quarter ended (Humboldt led 36-6 with nearly three minutes left in the quarter), Cubs head coach Logan Wyrick said its always fun to win.
We got Trenton Ray his first varsity touch of his career. We got Briar Orth a touchdown, we got Titan Michael a touchdown, those are a couple of seniors who have never scored. Those guys have been good players for us and have done everything we asked them to, Wyrick said. It was good seeing them get into the end zone. Its always fun to win. We like to be in some battles sometimes, but its always good to win.
The win secured at least a share of the conference title for Humboldt, who heads into a showdown with Southeast Cherokee next week. SECHS lost to Riverton 40-6 on Friday night.
If Humboldt wins on the road they win the conference, if they lose they will finish in a three-way tie with Riverton and SECHS.
Regardless of what happens, it doesnt matter who won that game because we didnt cover our points last week. Its all still up in the air, Wyrick said. Either way Rivertons loss last week was their first in the district, anyway. A lot can happen and it could all come down to points.
Following Havilands long touchdown score, it looked like he had another on a 53-yard run, but it was called back. It didnt matter though, as Cooper Jaro bolted in from 7-yards out moments later to give Humboldt a 14-0 lead.
Orth came up with a fumble recovery at the Vikings 18-yard line, and Isiah Coronado did the rest, taking it in from 15 yards for the score, making it 22-0 with 7:21 left in the first quarter.
Coronado picked off a pass on the Vikings next possession.
Jaro then took an option pitch around the right side for a 19-yard touchdown, pushing the score to 30-0 with 5:55 remaining.
The Vikings lone bright spot came on an 76-yard scoring run by Jasper Atchison.
But that happiness would soon vanish, just like the No. 20 jersey did bolting down the sideline, as Haviland added a 56-yard touchdown to give the Cubs a 36-6 lead at the end of the first.
Following a 42-yard pass to Kyle Kobold, Jackson Aikens scored from 34-yards out to push the score to 44-6.
