Humboldt and Yates Center high schools’ boys and girls basketball teams will open substate action at home this week.
The Cubs (13-7) are the fourth seed in their Class 3A substate and will host Osage City (9-11) at 7 o’clock tonight in the Humboldt Community Fieldhouse. The Lady Cubs (10-10) are the third seed and will host Osawatomie at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Yates Center’s boys (9-11) will travel to Mound City at 7 p.m. Tuesday to take on Jayhawk-Linn to open postseason play in Class 2A. The Wildcat girls (8-10) are the sixth seed and will travel to Pleasanton tonight at 7 for their substate quarterfinal.
But before they could focus on the postseason, the squads had to contend with each other to wrap up the regular season Friday.
Humboldt’s Conor Haviland scored 23 and Josh Hull 14 to lead the Humboldt boys to a 53-43 victory over Yates Center. The Wildcats’ Reece Solander, who earlier was crowned homecoming king, erupted for 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter. The late outburst helped keep things close for Yates Center, but the Wildcats were unable to make up what had been a 38-28 deficit.
IN GIRLS action, both teams struggled mightily from the line in Humboldt’s 37-35 victory. The Lady Cubs hit 4 of 12 charities; Yates Center 11 of 22.
Winter Snyder and Jessica Myers scored eight points each for the victors; Madelyn Collins scored 16 to pace Yates Center. Morgan Collins followed with eight.
