HUMBOLDT- What started as a tight ball game Friday night slowly unraveled for Fredonia High’s Yellowjackets as Humboldt High’s boys beat their Tri-Valley League rivals 50-33.
A back and forth battle in the first period and a last second three pointer had Fredonia up 7-6. But the lead didn’t last long. A sluggish first period for the Cubs offensively was soon forgotten as they went on a 12-4 scoring run in the second period. Humboldt took a 18-11 lead into the locker room at the break.
“As long as we stay together and play hard, we’re successful,” said David Taylor, Cubs head coach.
Things really came undone for Fredonia in the second half. A 19-6 run in the third put gave the Cubs a 20-point lead heading into the final period.
“I didn’t think we played very well offensively in the first half but we pulled away in the third quarter,” Taylor said, adding that a top-notch effort under the boards helps seal the deal. The Cubs outrebounded the Yellowjackets 57-20.
Tanner McNutt led the Cubs and the game with 15 points. Teammates Noah Thornbrugh added 14 and Hunter Murrow added seven points. Murrow also had two assists.
Thornbrugh led the Cubs in rebounds with eight, while McNutt secured five boards of his own. The two leading rebounders each had two blocks as well.
Leading scorer for the Yellowjackets was Alex Wilson with seven points.
