Cubs roll out to 6-0 start on baseball field

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s Cubs have recorded a 6-0 start to the 2012 season.

On Monday, the Cubs powered past visiting Burlington High’s Wildcats 12-5 and 15-5, a five-inning contest.

Grayson Pearish was the winning pitcher for Humboldt in the opener charged with three runs on nine hits. Austin Beeman allowed two runs in two innings of work.

The big inning for Humboldt was the third, when the Cubs scored six runs to extend their 2-1 lead. 

They added three more in the fifth and one in the sixth to go up 12-3.

Hunter Murrow connected for two doubles and a single. Jacob Carpenter hit two singles and Nathan Whitcomb had a single.

Humboldt led 7-5 after one inning in the second game. The Cubs had five-run frames in the second and fourth innings plus one run in the fifth while keeping the Wildcats scoreless.

Whitcomb threw a one-hitter for the victory. He walked five and struck out five.

Carpenter delivered two doubles and a single and Pearish had three singles. Whitcomb and H. Murrow each hit a single and a double. Alex Murrow and Caleb Vanatta had two singles apiece and Beeman singled.

The wins put the Cubs at 4-0 in Tri-Valley League play. They travel to Eureka Monday for a league twin bill.

The Cubs began the season with a sweep of Neodesha in TVL action. Whitcomb tossed a two-hitter in a 4-0 victory. He walked one batter, hit one and rang up seven strikeouts.

Dustin Prock hit two singles for the Cubs. Pearish and Caleb D’Armond each had a single. Humboldt scored three runs in the seventh inning.

Pearish and Vanatta combined for a no-hitter in a 6-1 Cub win over the Bluestreaks. Pearish started and worked six innings, allowing one run on one walk and three hit batters, plus  he recorded 10 strikeouts. Vanatta pitched one inning to finish it.

Pearish connected for two singles. Whitcomb and H. Murrow had a double apiece while A. Murrow and Kason Siemens each had a single.

Last Thursday, the Cubs won a home non-league doubleheader against Erie.
