EUREKA — The theme for Humboldt High’s boys Friday evening was unity.
“It looked like they enjoyed playing together tonight,” Cub head coach David Taylor said. “The guys played very unselfishly.”
Humboldt coupled that togetherness on offense with an air-tight defense to thump host Eureka High 55-28.
“We talked a lot this week about playing together and that’s what they did,” Taylor said. “They really showed some energy. It was fun to watch.”
Taylor noted the guards made good entry passes to Humboldt’s post players, which led to several easy scoring opportunities.
Humboldt led 17-6 after one quarter and 36-18 at the break. Eureka prevented the lead from growing too much through the third quarter, but the Cubs ended the game with a 10-3 run.
Noah Thornbrugh was a beast underneath for Humboldt with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Tanner McNutt did the damage from the outside with 22 points.
Trey Johnson added seven rebounds, while Derrik McCall and Seth Nickell had three assists each.
“Trey did a great job of getting to rebounds, which allowed our other players to get better scoring opportunities,” Taylor said.
Tyler Kuhn scored 14 to lead Eureka.
The Tornadoes won the junior varsity contest 31-16 in two quarters. Caleb Vannata led Humboldt’s JV with nine points.
Humboldt doesn’t have much time to gloat over the win. The Cubs travel to Caney Valley tonight in a contest postponed from earlier this month due to snow.
