Humboldt High School freshman Connor Newman continues hauling in first- place medals after winning the Fredonia Invitational Tuesday.
Newman picked up his fourth first-place medal after shooting a 75 at the par 72 course at the Fredonia Golf Club. Teammates junior Layne Ellison, senior Curt Shannon and freshman Bryer Grisier finished in the top 25.
Five Cubs attended the meet.
“While a touch on the windy side, we had great weather which helped with our scores,” Humboldt coach Bret Hauser said.
Newman took first by shooting a 38 on the front nine holes, then 37 on the back nine to get the win by five strokes and just three strokes.
“He had a rough stretch in the middle third of the front nine but was able to bounce back with a string of pars,” Hauser said. “On the back nine, he had a couple of good up and downs for par to seal his fourth win in five meets.”
Ellison carded a 100 for 15th overall and second among the Cubs. After shooting a 51 in the opening round, he shaved two strokes off his score on the back to close out the day.
“Ellison has continued to lower his score and hit 100, getting close to his goal of breaking 100 this year,” Hauser said. “He was able to knock 19 strokes off the same course from last year. His starting hole was his worst of the day with a triple bogey, but after that he was shooting just over bogey per hole. He has continued to show growth and I know a score in the 90s is just around the corner.”
Shannon finished 24th overall after opening with 61 on the front nine, then improving for 55 on the back and carding 116 on the day.
Grisier was a stroke behind Shannon with a 117 after shooting a 57 on the front, a 61 one on the back. Sophomore Thatcher Mueller finished 26th after shooting a 60 on the front nine, then 58 on the back to card a 118.
“Shannon went out and was able to improve his score from the back to the front, lowering his personal course record by 16 strokes,” Hauser said. “Grisier has continued to improve and is starting to shave a few strokes off at each course we go to. Mueller had a rough start but was able to improve as the day went along.”
