High School Baseball: Cubs 6, Chargers 4; Cubs 8, Chargers 2
The third-ranked Cub baseball team continued to truck its way through the Tri-Valley League Tuesday evening with a home sweep of Cherryvale.
The Cubs won game one 6-4 and game two 8-2, moving to 13-1 overall and 8-0 in league play. Theyve won five-straight since splitting with Burlington on April 12.
The Cubs opened up a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game one and Cherryvale cut that in half with a run in the top of the third. The Cubs answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-1 lead.
The Chargers scored two more runs in the top of the fifth to get within three but a Cub run in the bottom of the inning pushed their lead to four.
Cherryvale attempted a rally in the top of the seventh but only got one run in before the game ended.
Josh Vanatta got the win for the Cubs, going five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Jackson Aikins and Conor Haviland each had two hits and Lance Daniels scored two runs on a hit.
In game two, the Cubs got out to a nice seven-run lead thanks to two runs in the first inning, a run in the third and four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Cherryvale got a couple of runs in the top of the fifth only for Humboldt to respond with a run in the bottom of the inning, pushing the lead to 8-2. The Chargers were unable to get anything else going in the final two innings and the Cubs walked away with the win.
Cooper Jaro got the start and the win, going the full seven innings allowing two runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
Dagen Goodner had a nice game offensively for Humboldt, recording three hits and driving in two runs. Vanatta had two hits and Daniels and Taylor Lassman each drove in two runs on a hit.
The series with the Chargers wrapped up their home slate of games. The Cubs will head to Lebo on Friday before playing a series at Erie and Caney Valley next week to wrap up the season.
