HUMBOLDT-Spectators probably wouldn’t have guessed the Humboldt High Cubs were coming off a long Christmas break after watching the boys basketball team blowout Yates Center High’s Wildcats Friday night 64-31.
From the tip off until the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Cubs dominated on their home floor, more than doubling Yates Center’s score in each of the first three periods.
Holding the Wildcats to just 15 first-half points, the Cubs took a 18 point lead into half.
Humboldt head coach David Taylor said an uptempo transition offense was the key to opening up such a big lead.
“We got out in transition real well in the first quarter. And it’s our first game since coming back from Christmas break so I’m not displeased,” he said.
The Cubs picked up right where they left off, opening the second half with eight unanswered points. Humboldt pushed the lead to 24 points and forcing a running clock by the end of the third period.
“At times we really moved the ball well against their zone and everybody did a good job of filling slots in transition,” Taylor said.
Leading the Cubs’ offense were Tanner McNutt and Noah Thornbrugh with 16 points each. The duo also led the team with four steals each. Thornbrugh lead the team with 12 rebounds.
Leading scorer for Yates Center was Blake Francis with 10 points.
