Cubs lose in tournament title game

PLEASANTON — Humboldt High’s Cubs weren’t able to keep Central Heights High’s Vikings in check during the second half Saturday. Both teams had scoring runs in the first half with the Cubs holding a 27-24 halftime lead.

The Vikings outscored the Cubs 24-16 and 20-15 in the third and fourth periods, respectively, for a 68-58 victory. The win also put the 2012 Pleasanton High Blu-Jays Mid-Season Tournament championship in the Vikings’ pocket.

Uniontown High’s Eagle girls ended up on the short end of a 44-24 decision in their third-place game in the tournament. Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jayhawks used a 19-6 second quarter to boost themselves to the win.

Uniontown’s boys fell in their third-place game also. Prairie View High’s Buffalos beat the Eagles 41-34 Saturday. Crest High’s Lancers outlasted the Jayhawk-Linn High Jayhawks 51-43 in the boys’ fifth-place contest.

In the girls’ division, Humboldt’s Lady Cubs dropped a 53-43 decision to Pleasanton and finished sixth. Crest High’s Lady Lancers posted their second win of the season, beating  the winless Altoona-Midway High Jets 30-29 in the seventh-place game.

Boys

Central Heights 68, Humboldt 58. Trey Johnson connected four times from outside the three-point arc on his way to a team-high 18 points for the Cubs. Tanner McNutt had three treys in his 15 points. Noah Thornbrugh tossed in 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

The Cubs shot 39 percent, 24 of 61, from the field but hit 3 of 9 free throw attempts. Nathan Whitcomb had two steals and seven assists and McNutt had five assists.

The Vikings got 22 points from Adam Seyler, 19 from Cody Sluder and 12 from Sam Leach.

Crest 51, Jayhawk-Linn 43. The Lancers had to fight back from a 17-4  deficit and through foul trouble against the Jayhawks.

The Lancers pulled to within two, 23-21, by halftime. Crest outscored Jayhawk-Linn 30-20 in the second half.

Jordan Morton downed four threes on his way to 17 points for the Lancers. Kyle Hammond added 13. Crest was 16 of 25 from the free-throw line.

Jayhawk-Linn got 15 points from Austin Coleman.

Girls

Jayhawk-Linn 44, Uniontown 24. Shooting just 24 percent, 9 of 38, from the field didn’t cut it for the Eagles against the Jayhawks. The Jayhawks went 17 of 34, 50 percent, from the field.
