Cubs lose first game of the season in Thursday split

The prospect of an undefeated season for the No. 1 ranked Humboldt baseball team ended on Thursday when they split at home versus Burlington.

The Cubs lost game one 3-2 before getting a big 10-3 win in game two. Humboldt moves to 9-1 this season.

The Cubs held two different leads in game one starting with a run they scored in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Burlington tied it up at one with a run in the top of the fourth.

Humboldt got its second lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Burlington tied it up at two in the top of the sixth and took their first lead with one run scored in the top of the seventh.

The Cubs had the bottom of the seventh to try and tie or take the lead. Humboldt was able to get Cooper Jaro on with one out but couldn’t get anything going after that.

Lance Daniels and Taylor Lassman got four of the team’s five hits in the game. Lassman drove two runs in with his two hits.

Jackson Aikins earned the loss, going 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on six hits and three balls. Aikins struck out four.

Humboldt came out strong in game two. The Wildcats took an early one-run lead in the top of the first before Humboldt drove in four in the bottom of the inning to take a lead that they wouldn’t give up.

The Cubs scored another four runs in the bottom of the third before Burlington scored two runs in the top of the fourth and fifth to cut the lead to 8-3. The Cubs scored a final two runs in the bottom of the sixth to finish the game off.

Daniels, Lassman, Wyatt Seufert and Dagen Goodner each recorded two hits with Daniels leading the way by driving in four runs.

Jaro earned the win allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk in five innings.

The Humboldt girls took on Burlington Thursday evening and were swept 10-8 and 9-0. The losses are their first of the season.

The Cubs will host their baseball and softball tournaments next Friday.
