Cubs lose 2-1A district opener

OSWEGO  — Humboldt High’s Cubs weren’t able to string back-to-back wins together on the football field
The Cubs got rocked by Oswego High’s Indians 46-21 as they opened Kansas Class 2-1A, District 1 play Friday night.
The Indians broke out to a 20-0 first-quarter lead and were up 26-7 at intermission.
“We knew if we were going to put ourselves in position to win we would have to take care of the ball and score when we had chances,” said Mike Miller, Cub head coach.
“We didn’t do that. We had chances to make a game of it but couldn’t get stops when we needed them.”
Down 20-0, Humboldt scored on a 16-yard pass play from Nathan Whitcomb to Alex Murrow with 1:38 left in the second quarter. Hayden Boring had the extra-point kick.
Nick Billingsley scored a third touchdown before halftime for Oswego to make it 26-7. He had four touchdowns in the game.
The Indians scored two touchdowns before Humboldt got back on the scoreboard. Trey Johnson had a five-yard touchdown run and Boring kicked the extra point.
Both teams scored in the fourth quarter. Johnson had another five-yard touchdown run with Boring kicking the extra point.
Oswego rolled up 443 yards on the ground to Humboldt’s 71 yards of rushing. Whitcomb was 14 of 27 passing for 202 yards
Johnson finished with 40 yards on 12 carries and Boring carried the football three times for 17 yards. Noah Thornbrugh had 13 yards rushing and caught three passes for 62 yards.
Tanner McNutt made four catches for 74 yards and Alex Murrow had four catches for 42 yards.
Defensively, Garyson Pearish made 10 tackles and Ryan Gean had eight tackles. Johnson made seven stops and Carpenter had six tackles. Gean and Zack Osborn each had a fumble recovery.
Humboldt (1-4) hosts Lyndon in district play this Friday and it is homecoming for the Cubs.
