Cubs hoist district trophy in Cherokee; win 50-18

CHEROKEE — Humboldt High’s Cubs secured their second straight undefeated regular season Friday in convincing fashion.

Humboldt (8-0) rolled up 410 rushing yards in a 50-18 pasting of Southeast-Cherokee to secure a Class 2A, District 1 championship as well.

The Cubs were led by — who else — Conor Haviland, who rushed 17 times for 322 yards and four touchdowns, covering 9, 34, 52 and 57 yards.

Haviland also connected on all three of his pass attempts, covering 46 yards, including an 11-yard strike to Isiah Coronado.

Cooper Jaro and Coronado scored on runs of 20 and 4 yards, respectively, to round out the scoring.

Next up is the first round of the 2A state playoffs, where Humboldt is likely to face off against Central Heights, which edged West Franklin 22-18 to clinch a postseason berth. Official pairings were not announced at press time.

In other area results, Marmaton Valley secured a playoff berth by defeating Chetopa, 58-8, Yates Center fell to Pleasanton, 80-54, Crest shut out Altoona-Midway, 20-0, and St. Paul downed Southern Coffey County, 64-14.
