EUREKA — A win’s a win.
Humboldt High’s Cubs weren’t at the top of their game Tuesday in a Tri-Valley League contest at Eureka. The Cubs rallied for a 60-57 win over Eureka High’s Tornadoes.
The Lady Cubs got swamped by the Tornado girls, 71-23.
“It’s always a good statistic when you make more free throws than your opponent shoots. That was key for us tonight,” said David Taylor, Humboldt boys’ head coach.
“We weren’t as focused as we have been throughout the season. The kids came back and continued to play hard in the second half and got the win.”
Humboldt was 19 of 29 at the free-throw line. Eureka went 7 of 11.
The Cubs were up 21-15 after one quarter of play. Eureka swept to a 33-29 halftime lead on an 18-8 run in the second period.
Humboldt kept coming with a 14-12 advantage in the third quarter. The Cubs regained the lead “with a couple of minutes left to play” as they outscored the Tornadoes 14-12 in the fourth.
Noah Thornbrugh had a double-double with 29 points and 11 rebounds for the Cubs. Tanner McNutt fired in 14 points. Blake Crawford added 11.
Humboldt had just four turnovers in the game. The Cubs had a 25 to 20 rebounding edge.
“We usually outrebound people by at least 10. We didn’t rebounded as well or play defense, overall, as well as we need to but we won and that’s the main thing.”
Eureka got 14 points each from Colton Pitko and Hunter Moore. Logan Hayes added 11 points.
The Cubs improved to 8-4 on the season.
HUMBOLDT’S girls fell to the home team as they turned the ball over against the Tornadoes.
