Cubs get past Eagles

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt  High’s Cubs defeated visiting Uniontown High’s Eagles 2-1 and 12-8 Thursday.
In the opener, the Cubs scored a run in the first inning and one in the sixth. The Eagles had just tied the game up with a run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Jordan Woods.
Elijah Friederich walked one and struck out seven in getting the pitching victory for the Cubs. Seth Nickell had a triple. Jacob Manbeck, Ryan Gean and Cole Morrison each had a single.
Uniontown’s Anthony Myers took the loss on the mound with three strikeouts. Myers had two singles. Tyler Hall and Max Labbe each had a double and Tyler Felt singled.
Humboldt won it’s fourth straight when the Cubs blew a 5-4 game into a 12-4 game in the sixth inning. The Eagles did come up with four runs in the top of the seventh before the Cubs shut them down.
Nickell got the win as he went 61⁄3 innings for the Cubs, surrendering six runs on six hits and four walks. Friederich got the final two outs after issuing a walk and giving up two runs.
The Cubs scored four runs in the third — three came on a home run by Manbeck, who also had a single. Derrik McCall tripled. Dustin Prock had a single and a double. Fried-erich, Coronado and  Riley McMillen each had a single. Jake Dawson took the loss on the mound for the Eagles. Hall had a double. Labbe and Myers each had a single.
Uniontown is 5-7 on the season. Humboldt is 4-11 and hosts Iola today.
