CHERRYVALE — On the strength of seven individual championships, Humboldt  High finished second in boys and girls divisions in the annual Tri-Valley League powerlifting championships here Saturday.

Winning titles on the boys’ side, determined by total weight lifted in bench, squat and clean positions, were Ryan Sellman, Dawson Lohman, Isiah Coronado, Tucker Hurst and David Watts. Hurst and Watts won each of their three events. For the girls, sophomore Madison Riebel won all three of her lifts and junior Alayna Johnson won two and took second in another, to claim individual crowns.

In the 148-pound category, Coronado, a junior, hoisted 395 pounds in the squat to break the league record of 345 set in 2014. He and Dexter Queen, Cherryvale, hold the record in the 140-pound category at 335.

Johnson duplicated the feat in the girls’ 156-pound category by squatting 225 to break the record she and Rebecca Hamilton, Eureka, had held at 215.

CHERRYVALE edged Humboldt, 97-92, for the title, an outcome that might have been different had all Humboldt lifters been able to report for duty.

Nonetheless, Coach Jason Weilbert was pleased with the outcome. This was the fifth consecutive year Cherryvale, a regional powerhouse, has won the boys championship.

On the girls’ side, Humboldt scored 67 points for a solid second-place finish ahead of Eureka at 51, which has been noted for its weightlifting program. Cherryvale won with 109.

The performances of Riebel, Hurst and Watts stood out.

Riebel lifted a total 525 pounds, including 270 in the squat, an individual discipline at which Humboldt participants excel.

Watts, who told the Register he intends to continue his football career at Southwestern College, Winfield, totaled 975 pounds in his three lifts. Hurst, another senior, was just five pounds back in his 220-pound weight class at 970.
