GREAT BEND — Humboldt baseball ended its season Friday afternoon with a 19-3 loss to Rossville in the 2-1A State Tournament third-place game.

The Cubs were coming off of a 14-3 loss to eventual state-champion Elkhart in the semifinals earlier that day. Their pitching depth exhausted, the Cubs were no match for Rossville’s explosive offensive attack.

The Cubs trailed by only 4-3 after two innings but the Bulldogs went on to score 15 more runs in the next three innings to put away the game.

Jackson Aikins got the start and earned the loss, allowing six runs on three hits and six walks in his first two innings.

Freshman Kaiden Barnett came in relief, allowing 13 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits and a walk in three innings.

Gavin Page had two hits in the game and Gunner Elder and Dagen Goodner each had doubles.

The Cubs end their season at 21-5 overall with a league and regional title to their credit. They return all but six off of this year’s varsity squad for next season.
