Cubs fall in thriller

While disappointed by the loss, Humboldt coach Mike Miller was far from disappointed by the effort after his pitcher threw seven scoreless innings before the Cubs fell in extra innings on a walk-off single.

Humboldt High School senior pitcher Logan Page winds up while pitching seven scoreless innings during Wednesday’s game against Chanute.

In a game that had to end sometime, the Humboldt Cubs fell to the Chanute Blue Comets 1-0 Wednesday.

With both teams locked in a pitcher’s duel heading into extra innings, Chanute broke the 0-0 stalemate with a walk-off RBI single.

“We were just one hit away a couple of times from pushing a runner across,” Humboldt coach Mike Miller said. “We just couldn’t come up with the big hit when we needed it.”

Although walking away with a loss, the atmosphere in the Humboldt dugout seemed much different. Humboldt pitcher Logan Page had a phenomenal performance with 11 strikeouts over seven innings with only two walks.

“He got out of a couple of different tight spots in a couple of different situations, and we made some good defensive plays too,” Miller said. “Chanute played well. It was a really good baseball game. There is no other way to put it. You wish you could put some runs on the board to help the pitcher out, but it just wasn’t in the cards tonight.”

First baseman Colden Cook hit in 2 of 3 opportunities and four other Cubs were above .300 on the day after hitting in 1 of 3 opportunities. The Cubs’ brief respite from the Tri-Valley Conference came after both coaches decided to reschedule a previous rain delay. With Page likely out of the lineup on the mound, Miller said he may have to delve into his bullpen when the Cubs face Fredonia Thursday.

“We wanted to schedule tough opponents and get that experience,” Miller said. “You always want to win, but you learn a lot from losing as well. Hopefully, we learned a lot tonight and we can use that to become a better baseball team.”
