ERIE — The Humboldt High baseball team shut down Erie Thursday.
The Cubs (4-0) caught fire at the plate late to take an 18-2 victory in the first game before Humboldt’s pitching held Erie scoreless in the second game for a 15-0 lopsided victory.
Game one
It was a scoring rampage late for the Humboldt bats as they got behind the swings of Sam Hull and Trey Sommer. Each hit home runs in a 12-run seventh inning to take the win.
The Cubs also got behind starting pitcher Logan Page.
The Cubs opened up the scoring in the top of the third before scoring three more runs in the fourth. Humboldt put the finishing touches on their offensive outburst by scoring 14 runs in the final two innings following Erie scoring a couple in the bottom of the fifth.
Hull led Humboldt’s effort at the plate when he drove in five runs and had two hits. Kyler Isbell drove in three runs while Colden Cook and Carson Bremerman each knocked in two. Cook and Isbell each had three hits while five other Cubs collected two hits apiece.
Page threw 3.1 innings and didn’t allow any runs on three hits and struck out seven Red Devil batters. Brody Gunderman tossed the final 3.2 innings and was hit with a couple of runs on three hits with six strikeouts.
“Logan (Page) didn’t have his best stuff on the mound in game one but he held their offense down,” said Humboldt head coach Mike Miller. “Brody came on in relief and made some big pitches in tough spots.”
Game two
Hull got the nod to start on the mound in game two. He needed only three innings thanks to the offensive performance by the Cubs.
Humboldt scored eight runs in the second inning and seven more in the third to secure a 15-run limit victory.
“Our offense stayed hot in the second game and we were able to put up runs early for a change. Sam was great on the mound,” said Miller. “He had the best stuff I’ve seen from him in a while. It was great to finally see our offense break out and string some hits together. We had some guys really struggling at the plate so it was great to see them have some success and hopefully it carries over to next week.”
The Cubs were led at the plate by Page’s four RBIs and Cole Mathes’ three RBIs while Jacob Harrington, Hull and Sommer each knocked in two runs. Hull led the way with four hits while Harrington and Mathes each clubbed three hits.
Humboldt travels to Fredonia next Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
