EUREKA — A few too many mistakes turned into a pair of tough losses for Humboldt High’s baseball team Monday.
The Cubs saw host Eureka score the tie-breaking runs in the sixth innings at both ends of a doubleheader.
Humboldt’s 3-2 and 10-9 defeats dropped the Cubs to 6-4 on the season.
“It’s always tough when you lose close games,” Cub head coach Mike Miller said. “Our pitchers threw well enough for us to come away with two wins. We just made too many mistakes behind them, unfortunately.”
The loss in Game 1 spoiled Trey Sommer’s splendid pitching performance. He allowed three hits over six innings, with seven strikeouts. Only one of Eureka’s three runs was earned, as Humboldt committed four errors on the day.
Gavin Page and Sommer combined to provide the game’s first run. Page singled with one out in the fourth, stole second and scored on Sommer’s single.
The advantage didn’t last long. A two-out error kickstarted a Eureka rally that resulted in two runs and a 2-1 Tornado lead.
Trenton Heisler’s RBI single in the top of the sixth drove in Evan Lucke to tie the score once again.
But Eureka responded in the bottom with a run on two hits to take the lead for good.
Sommer singled twice with an RBI for the Cubs, while Robbie Robinson, Gavin Page, Evan Lucke and Trenton Heisler all singled once.
EUREKA led 3-0 after two innings of the nightcap before the Cubs took advantage of a pair of walks, followed by two errors sandwiched around an RBI double by Lucke to lead, 5-3 in the third.
Eureka knotted the score in the bottom of the inning, but Sommer’s RBI double gave the lead back to Humboldt. Lucke then drove in Sommer with a single for a 7-5 lead. A Eureka error preceded Garen Goodner’s run-scoring single to give Humboldt a 9-5 margin.
A walk and two singles to open Eureka’s half of the sixth turned the tide for good.
Two RBI singles and a sac fly trimmed Iola’s lead to 9-8 with two outs.
An error followed by another single pushed Eureka in front, 10-9.
A walk and hit batter put two Cub runners on base with two outs in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout ended the rally and game.
