FREDONIA — Humboldt High’s baseball team hit a rough spell with its fielding Thursday.
The Cubs committed 14 errors on the day, seven in both games of its doubleheader at Fredonia High.
That, and some struggles at the plate, equated to the team’s first two losses of the season, 9-1 and 11-0.
Humboldt’s Evan Lucke and Fredonia’s Ian Houchin were locked in a scoreless duel for the first three innings of the opener, but the Yellowjackets took control from there, scoring three in the fourth and one in the fifth, before erupting for a five-run sixth.
Humboldt’s sole run came on Gavin Page’s RBI in the top of the seventh.
Trey Sommer singled twice, while Trenton Heisler had a double. Page, Sam Hull and Caden Vink added singles.
Lucke wound up surrendering five hits with two strikeouts. Heisler came on in relief and gave up two hits in 1 ⅔ innings.
FREDONIA dispatched any sense of drama quickly in the nightcap, scoring four times in the first, one in the second and five in the third.
Hull got the start for Humboldt, and gave up six hits in three innings. Hunter Bauer pitched one inning, giving up two hits.
The Cubs were limited to two hits on the day, singles by Heisler and Jack White.
“I really thought our pitchers did enough in both games to give us a chance to be competitive,” Humboldt head coach Mike Miller said. “Unfortunately, we made too many errors behind them on defense and couldn’t get anything going offensively. That’s not a good recipe for winning baseball.”
Humboldt is back in action at Eureka Monday.
