HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Cubs nearly completed a full sweep of Fredonia on Tuesday in Humboldt.
After the Humboldt boys swept Fredonia in the varsity, junior varsity and C-Team games and the Cub varsity girls team notched a win, the Yellowjackets were able to salvage at least one victory for their trip to Humboldt with a 28-25 victory in the girls junior varsity game.
Early on, it looked as if the Cubs were going to get the sweep.
Led by sophomore Maggie Johnson, the Cubs were able to open up a 7-5 lead at the end of the first period.
Johnson scored five of her team-high seven points in the opening quarter.
In the second period, both teams were able to get their offenses on track and Fredonia narrowed the Humboldt lead to 17-16 at halftime.
The Cubs were able to open the game up in the third quarter by outscoring the Yellowjackets 8-1 and taking a 25-17 lead going into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, the Cubs lost the services of Johnson — she was limited to two quarters because she played extensively in the varsity game — and Fredonia was able to roar back.
The Yellowjackets had an 11-0 fourth quarter to win the game 28-25.
In addition to Johnson’s seven points, Humboldt was paced by Alayna Johnson and Madison Gean with four apiece.
Kirsten Roush and Winter Snyder each scored three. Emma Johnson and Kaylie Johnson each had two.
