HUMBOLDT — The Cubs were determined to make it a quick night on Tuesday and there wasn’t much Altoona-Midway or Cherryvale could do to stop them.
Against Cherryvale, the Cubs used a diverse offense to keep the Chargers guessing. Five players contributed to Humboldt’s 13 kills with each player earning at least two.
Kaylie Johnson led the way with four kills and Aricah McCall registered three. Annalise Whitcomb, Lizzie Myers and Sydney Houk each had two.
Where the Cubs really shined was at the service line. They recorded 20 aces in route to the 35-9, 25-5 victory.
“We finally came out and played our style of volleyball,” Cub coach Terry Meadows said. “We really served the ball well, especially Annalise and Aricah.”
Whitcomb had 10 aces to set a school record for aces in a single match. McCall added four.
Whitcomb continued her strong play against Altoona-Midway and led the Cubs to another straight sets victory, 25-13, 25-5.
She finished the game with a team-high 12 assists and a team-high six kills. The senior was able to score all six times she attacked the net in the two sets.
Myers also had a very strong game and matched Whitcomb with six kills of her own.
“Against Altoona-Midway, we were able to put the ball away with our offense, which gave us the opportunity to work on some different offensive plays,” Meadows said.

JUNIOR VARSITY
The Cub junior varsity was also able to sweep both teams.
Against Altoona-Midway, they won the first set 25-8 and the second 25-13.
Madison Gean led the team with five kills. Alayna Johnson had eight assists and Camrie Farran had seven aces.
Gean matched that kill total again in the team’s 25-18, 25-10 sweep over Cherryvale. Johnson had 11 assists.
The Cub C-Team also swept both teams with Hope Kamanga leading the way with four kills.
