ERIE With a career filled with superior performances on the gridiron, Humboldt Highs Conor Haviland may have outdone them all Friday evening.
The senior standout made the most of his seven carries, racking up a mind-boggling 221 yards and five touchdowns all in the first half.
Haviland also was perfect on his four pass attempts, covering 53 more yards and another touchdown in the Cubs 64-0 win over host Erie.
The victory keep Humboldts record spotless at 5-0.
The overmatched Red Devil defenders could do little more than cringe each time Haviland kept the ball.
He opened the scoring with a 52-yard touchdown run minutes into the game, followed by a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Aikins.
The fun really got started in the second quarter. Haviland scored on runs of 82, 31 and 16 yards. By halftime, Humboldt head coach Logan Wyrick was more than willing to pull off the throttle.
With a running clock in effect in the second half, both of Humboldts scores came on defense or special teams.
Aikins returned the third-quarter kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, while Drake Harrington ran an interception back 35 yards for the final score of the day in the fourth quarter. Gunner Elder also had a 43-yard touchdown run for the victors.
About the only suspense in the air came in the games waning moments when Erie threatened to score.
But Humboldts Ethan Doepke picked off a Red Devil pass in the end zone as time expired in to preserve the shutout.
The win moves the Cubs to 2-0 in district play. Next week, Humboldt is scheduled to host Riverton, who also stands at 2-0 in district play. Most recently, the Rams rolled past Northeast 48-18 at home.
Next Friday will also be Humboldts homecoming game.
