Cubs compete for Tri-Valley League title

Humboldt wrestlers led by Watts, the only Cub to finish first in his weight class. Lady Cubs become the first girls wrestling Tri-Valley League champs.

The Humboldt boys rumbled their way to bronze in the Tri-Valley League meet on Thursday afternoon in Fredonia.

Brandon Watts was the only Cub to finish first in his respective weight class. In the 285-pound division, Watts received a first-round bye before winning both bouts by fall to claim gold. 

Maddox Johnson tussled his way to silver in the 220-pound division. After a bye in the quarterfinals, Johnson won by fall in the semifinal, but lost by the same result in the first-place match. He then recovered in the second-place match, earning a win by fall. 

Dakota Slocum finished third in the 152-pound division. After a round-one victory by decision (15-8), Slocum lost his final two bouts by fall. 

Both Colton Johnson and Ethan Deopke finished fourth. In 138-pound action, Johnson lost his first bout by fall, but rebounded for a win in the consolation semifinals by fall. Johnson then lost the third-place match by fall. Doepke suffered a quarterfinal defeat by fall, but then picked up a win by fall in the consolation semis to earn a spot in the 145-pound third-pace match, which he lost by fall. 

River Kaufman placed sixth in the 182-pound weight class. Kaufman went 1-3 on the day, with his solo win coming by fall in the first consolation round. 

HISTORY MAKERS

The Lady Cubs became the first girl’s wrestling Tri-Valley League champions on Monday. Cheyene Harris and Anna Goforth both finished as league champions in their respective weight class, while Alayna Johnson finished second.
