MOUND CITY — Two winless teams kicked off their season finale Friday night.
Humboldt High’s Cubs broke through first after holding host Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jayhawks on a fourth-down play at midfield. The Cubs marched down field and faced a fourth-and-10 at the Jayhawk 22-yard line.
Caleb Vanatta hauled in a a 22-yard scoring pass from Derrik McCall to put Humboldt on top.
“We had some momentum and held them to a fourth-and-long. They lined up to punt and the snap went over the punter’s head. We lost containment and he was able to throw the ball to their tight end and convert,” said Mike Miller, Cub head coach.
A few plays later, the Jayhawks tied the game on a long pass play. Miller said after that, the Cubs began to struggle to move the football. Jayhawk-Linn was able to take advantage for a 34-14 win.
Humboldt finished 0-9 for the 2010 season.
Turnovers and penalties hampered the Cub cause Friday night. The Cubs did get a touchdown run by Jock Wilson, who finished with 32 yards on six carries.
McCall rushed for 103 yards on 18 carries plus was 6 of 23 passing for 92 yards. Hayden Boring had 68 yards on 20 carries. Austin Coy caught three passes for 44 yards while Vanatta had the 22-yard touchdown reception and Jarred Barr had a catch for 15 yards.
“It’s not how we wanted to end the season but the kids played hard,” Miller said. “We just didn’t execute like we are capable of.”
Seth Nickell led the Humboldt defense with eight tackles. Gavin Betzen and McCall each had six tackles. Barr made four tackles and Wilson had three tackles.
McCall and Hunter Murrow each made an inteception. Vanatta and Huse each recovered a fumble.
Humboldt had 204 yards rushing for a total of 296 yards of offense. Jayhawk-Linn had 352 yards of total offense, 190 rushing and 162 passing.
The Jayhawks were whistled for 13 penalties for 135 yards while the Cubs had nine infractions for 67 yards.
