NEODESHA – Humboldt High’s Cubs took control of their season opener Friday from the tipoff. The Cubs rolled to an 18-8 first-quarter lead over host Neodesha High’s Bluestreaks and won 48-35.
“We played really well defensively the whole night but especially in the first half,” said David Taylor, Cub head coach.
“The kids looked really good for the first game. When we ran things right, we looked very good.”
The win put Humboldt on a solid start in Tri-Valley League play. The Cubs are 1-0 overall and in league action.
They step out of league play next week to host the Humboldt High early season tournament.
Humboldt was up 29-13 over Neodesha Friday night at halftime. The Cubs allowed just two field goals in the first half.
The second half was a bit tighter as the Bluestreaks stayed with the Cubs. Humboldt had a 13-12 scoring edge in the third quarter. Neodesha made a 10-6 run at the end.
Noah Thornbrugh had a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Cubs. Trey Johnson had seven rebounds and three assists.
Tanner McNutt dished and Blake Crawford each dished out four assists. Nathan Whitcomb had five steals.
“We have things to work on but this was a good start,” Taylor said.
Randy Groth scored 11 points for Neodesha. The Bluestreaks were 11 of 19 at the free-throw line.
Humboldt won the junior varsity game 52-34 led by Alex Murrow with 12 points.
The Cubs claimed a 60-25 win in the C-team game. Ethan Bartlett fired in 16 points and Jacob Carpenter had 12.
